  • 150px = content height

2️⃣ Padding

🔹 Definition

Padding is the space between the content and the border.
It creates space inside the element.

}

This adds 20px space on all four sides inside the border.

The border surrounds the padding and content.
It acts as the boundary of the element.

Border also increases the element’s total size.

🔹 Definition

Margin is the space outside the border.
It creates space between elements.

  • Margin is transparent.

  • Vertical margins can collapse.

}

This adds 30px space outside the element.

📏 How Total Width is Calculated (Default Behavior)

By default, CSS uses:

box-sizing: content-box;

🔹 Formula

Total Width = 
Content Width
+ Left & Right Padding
+ Left & Right Border
+ Left & Right Margin

🔹 Example

width: 200px;
padding: 20px;
border: 5px solid black;
margin: 10px;
}

🔹 Calculation

  • Content = 200px
  • Padding = 40px (20 + 20)
  • Border = 10px (5 + 5)
  • Margin = 20px (10 + 10)

Total width = 270px

📦 box-sizing Property

The box-sizing property controls how width and height are calculated.

1️⃣ content-box (Default)

Width and height apply only to content.

Padding and border are added outside.

box-sizing: content-box;
}

2️⃣ border-box

Width includes:

  • Content
  • Padding
  • Border

Padding and border are included inside the given width.

padding: 20px;
border: 5px solid black;

}

Now total width remains 200px, not 250px.

An outline is a line drawn outside the border.
